Our social worker was the very opposite of scary! She was a fabulous woman, so easy to talk to, comfortable with the kids, and never once did I feel that she was judging us or displeased by an answer we gave. She was patient with Avery and Bennett (and the little she saw of our wonderful napping Everett!), and the process was very smooth.
She came on Tuesday to do the family interview, and she spent about 3 hours with us. She asked the kids to draw a picture of what the family would look like with their 2 new members, and they got to work. Avery set up her shop right near us, and created a perfect family picture. I wish I had snapped a photo of it, but in words--- She drew the girls on one side; Mommy, Avery, and "sister" all holding hands, then a Christmas tree with a big star?, and on the other side it was "brother", Everett, Bennett, Daddy. So Mommy and Daddy were the end units holding the family together:) It was sweet. There was also no color differences in her drawing! I took the image to be a very positive one from a psychological view. And there was no coaching done!
Bennett got busy in the other room. Very busy. He came back with about 8 sheets of paper all taped together in a long line which he told us was his tree house. Not the assignment, but she didn't seem to care and thought it was excellent work! They were both great for the whole process.
Friday she came back for the individual interviews, and she spent about 1.5 hours there. Scott and I each sat with her individually, and my time was briefly interrupted by Avery and Bennett... I had set them up outside with some shaving cream and the hose, in their swimsuits. They came in covered in shaving cream to where I was, and I lovingly shooed them out to the front yard and turned the hose on for them to wash off:) I think she thought it was funny!
So now she writes up the report and we read over it to make sure all the information looks to be in order, and she sends it off to the agency. This should take a few weeks before we mark off "complete", but in essence the hard part is done- and besides paperwork it wasn't too hard!
Very thankful for people with a happy heart to be working in this adoption field to make the process smooth for all of us who share their hearts!
