Girls like to be pretty

Last Saturday we had a very quick respite- like less than 24 hours. We were asked to take the child for 10 days, and although we said yes, the social worker then relayed the message that the girl likes a lot of attention, and chose to place her with a single lady with no children in care, BUT she had a late night event she had to attend and so we took her for Saturday afternoon and overnight. The child is 6 years old and this was new for us in terms of foster/respite, but I am quite comfortable with this age and she threw me no curve balls. The first thing she saw when the door opened was a fancy bow in Zuri's hair, and apparently before they had left the house there was an issue about her wearing a bow that the foster mom didn't want her to lose and didn't allow her to wear. I made her feel comfortable by offering up one of our MANY bows to choose from, and she picked one with a big snowflake on it. I of course had to make a comment how it was a great choice and asked if she like Frozen, and after that we were good friends. She told me that girls just always like to be pretty:)
I then showed her upstairs so she could put her things down, and I first showed her the "foster room", which is our extra bedroom with a twin bed, and a pack and play. I assured her that the pack and play was empty and there were no babies to bother her, and she would have peace and quiet if she wanted OR that she could sleep in Avery's room (we had made up a bed in there for her in case this was what she chose, and Avery made it very cute and comfy with lots of decorative pillows and a stuffed animal.) Everett piped in "Or you can sleep in MY room!" She had a very accurate reply for that one "I am not allowed to sleep in your room because the county says that boys and girls can't sleep in the same room". Yep. She has it right! (Unless they are under 5, which neither she nor Everett is). She picked Avery's room, with a follow up that she doesn't like to be alone:( Poor little peach! She slept great and I had to wake her the next morning, so it was a fine pick for all.
Our plan for the afternoon was grab a quick bite out, and go to the rodeo, which we happily brought her along to. She loved dinner, but was slightly bored at the rodeo as I guess she thought we were going to a park? Either way, it was a good outing and she got her first funnel cake so I am hoping THIS is what she remembers from the Daniel Family Outing, not the arguing in the car on the way back with 6 tired kids over who got to pick the next song we would listen to...
It was quite easy for me to be patient with her for the day, but honestly it may have been a long 10 days if she was placed with us for the longer respite as she likes to TALK and also be heard, and there is a whole lot of that in this house already. But our one day together all the kids accepted her well, Avery was amazing with her, and Everett and Mikaiah enjoyed her company. Zuri and Bennett were not as interactive with her just because of where we were.what we were doing and the short amount of time she was with us, but I will say that again it was GOOD for all of us, and I have thoroughly enjoyed being even a tiny piece of these children's lives.
